This year at Junior Kindergarten, we decided to create our own classroom alphabet. Each child was given a lowercase cardboard letter to take home and decorate with items that begin with the letter sound. Traditionally, upper case letters are taught first; however, the majority of letters used in writing are lower case so we want children to be familiar with these. When we talk about letters, we use the terms ‘letter name’ and ‘letter sound.’ For example, ‘n’ is the letter name, ‘nnnnnnn...’ is the letter sound.
The children and families showed such creativity with their letters. They were returned with stickers, pictures out of flyers/magazines, photographs of people, hand drawn pictures, craft materials, found items, nature items and much more! The letters are now proudly displayed on the wall of our music room. Great job, everyone! Thank you for taking the time to complete these at home.
Please take a moment to browse our beautiful alphabet wall gallery. If you still haven't returned your alphabet letter, do not fret! It will be added as soon as you bring it to JK! Each child's alphabet letter will be featured as we explore different alphabet letters throughout the year.
