Musical free play is important because it encourages children to explore music in their own way. The children may make music alone, with a classmate, or celebrate music as a group by integrating dancing and singing.
Each week a variety of instruments are set out. When the chime tree, triangles, and rectangular drum were set out the challenge was to create sounds like the falling leaves. This past week, two xylophones were available. We heard one student exclaim, "You be the white one, and I'll be the brown one!" Once they started playing, a few children moved closer and began creative dancing. Such authentic exploration is inspirational and fantastic!
