Our dramatic play area has been transformed into an Animal Neighbourhood!!
Boxes are used to create buildings, homes, caves, and beds. With rocks, wood beads, coloured scarves, ribbon, and pompoms the children are taking care of the animals' needs.
Our old friend, Chester the raccoon puppet, has returned to JK to share his story "Chester Raccoon and the Big Bad Bully," written by Audrey Penn. Chester told the children that he was concerned about the animal neighbourhood because some of the animals (shark & snake) are known to be agressive, like the badger in his story. He was wondering how the children could encourage the animals to be friendly, respectful and safe. Chester read a few pages from the class' Great Expectation book to help the children think of a few ideas of how the animals might act in friendly ways.
This was followed by a discussion circle and these are the children's responses:
MORNING CLASS
Alexander: They can play games together.
Jude: They shouldn't hurt each other. They should be gentle with each other.
Caleb: They can share food.
Coraline: They can make music together.
Alice: Share animals.
Rhea: They can walk together.
Winston: pass
Aviva: They can eat food together.
Thomas: They can build towers and a school.
Sophia: Share snack.
Bryten: They can share ideas.
Owen: They can share blankets and rooms.
Rayanna: They can pass the basket at super time.
Elena: Make cake together.
Isabelle: Add more food like meat. Sharks and snakes are carnivoires. If we give them meat, they won't eat the other animals!
Reem: pass
Andrew: Make marbles.
AFTERNOON CLASS
Amaiya: Play together.
Zara: Share toys.
Julia: Play catch ball.
Connor: Make yellow things (smooth yellow rocks-like in the book)
Chloe: Read books together.
Eva: Work as a team, be team players.
Luca: Sing and dance.
Jacob: pass
Victoria: Share a game.
The other children were absent.
Note: Thinking about how others can be friendly, respectful, and safe requires high level thinking and empathy. PROUD! We are so proud of the children and their thoughtful answers and play!
