This small nest inspired me for the following activities I've done with children in last few weeks. I noticed that the children were interested in building, and we had animal costumes in our classroom, so I made a connection with that, which is animal habitat.
I set up in the dramatic play area some story books related to animal habitats and I put a bird nest there too to provoke chidlren's thinking. To my surprise, the children showed me through their play and interactions that they were understanding this play topic. This was really helpful for me to extend this play topic in different areas, such as making crafts, drawing pictures, and dramatic play. Through play, the children explored a sense of belonging, using their languages to negotiate rules, develop friendships, and care for each other.
Last week we enjoyed a field trip to a second floor room to view the bird nests from another, more intimate, perspective. This inspired more children to join in crafts and play focusing on this topic. Children learn through play, and while I'm learning from them, they gave me many possibilites of learning so I can better understand their world.
At last, I'm so happy to have all of children, their families, and teachers in JK. This is a wonderful trip in my life. A small bird nest connected everyone here: we play together, we eat together, we learn together - we are a big family at JK.
